If you think you can handle it, try it. Why not? They are not expensive, no more than 15-20 bucks and I think it looks great when you get like 2 or 3. They kinda hang out in groups in the sand and rock. I think they are really great addition, I just wasn't experienced enough, nor my tank mature enough and the LFS guys kept saying it was a fluke that I was killing them. I learned otherwise, thanks to SWF.com.
I think your GF will find these a lot more cute and more fun than the CC starfish anyways. lol

I got a Green Brittle star i my Reef tank.
They are voracious eaters of detritus, and the under side of rocks. They dont like the light, so you wont see them often. However the tenticles stick out from rocks so you always know where they are.
Mine is pretty big. His legs are about 10 inches long, body is the size of a silver dollar. They are known to eat fish. I haven't had any problems with mine. He has plenty food, and is a great addition to my CuC. He lives down underneath with my engineer goby and shrimps.

yea mine is about the size of a quarter and his arms are about 4 in, mine gets under the bottom of a rock, it looks really cool
