reef tank lighting

my friend is turning his freshwater tank into a reef tank w/fish. He has a 30 gallon tank. The dimensions are 36 x 12 x 18. what type of lighting should he get exactly. what degree kelvin, what lenght bulbs, which brand and everything...thanks for hte help.

It completely depends on what inhabitants he wants.

hn kinda complicated question If he wants to do a fish only with live rock and some soft corals low light stuff I would say go power compact if he wants to do clams and high light stuff I think one metal halied in the middle would do it but the light will hit only 2 ft of tank directly so you could put some low light stuff on the ends of tank and hight light stuff in the middle I think that would work good. as far as light spectrum I use 10k bulbs but I run atinics I have never run 12k wich is more on the blue spectrum. I have read positive and neg about 12k maybe more will post about 12k
