How deep of a sand bed in your fuge. It looks really deep and is there an advantage to that as opposed to 3-4" DSB. sorry, 3 questions.

Sand bed is about 5 1/2 to 6" deep.. The reason I have it that deep is the shaving brushes and flat plants do well with a very deep substrate. I have had them for about a month and they already have roots (if you would call them that) that reach the bottom of the tank!.

Yup.. I have assorted snails in there to keep the macro algae i dont like in the the refugium cleaned up as well.. Plus they can spawn new snails to replace the ones in the display tank :)

2 more questions.
Why not overflow from the display to the refugium, then from the fuge to the sump?
Do you have an detailed pictures of how the water flows out of your fuge to your sump? I'm not sure how to get water out of my soon to be fuge without buying an expensive overflow.

Thanks for the good info Razor. I am in the process of updating my fuge and your suggestions will definitely be used. I dont know why i didnt think to have snails in mine. Duh.:notsure: Do you think beaslbob has that deep of a sandbed for his marine forest?
BTW...what is that in pic #1, it is gorgeous. Nice tank!

Nope its glass.. You can have your tank drilled and a "bulkhead" installed. I had an overflow on it but because of the low flow rates required on a fuge I was constantly getting airbubbles backflowing into the overflow U tube and causing the vaccum to break which of course you can guess.. flooded the room..

Gratz on the mangroves! I thought about those but went with brushes and flats...
Yea the bumps are new brushes.. They come up as white nubs and sprout new branches... Its really neat because they look like several plants.. but they are all connected under the substrate :)
I have cut a few out and frag'ed out to locals here.. They really grow very fast.
I had to cut the lights back.. Im only running a single 10k ...
I was getting tons of green algea in my fuge (SHUTTER) LoL..

again absolutely awesome.
and a very good example of how a fug can be part of the overall system to be viewed, not hidden away.

Thanks Bob.. Its just my personal choice. I find it sometimes as exciting to watch growth in there as I do in my main display.
Its funny... I have had company in the house and spend more time looking over the plant life and assorted snails in the refugium than they did looking at the corals... LOL

yeah i know what you mean, i built mine so people see the main tank first and then turn turn arounf the corner and see the refugium on the other side of the wall.

I love your setup Razor, very unique. My only question is, what is a Refugium? I've never seen, or heard of one before. How does it work? Why is it used? Thanks in advanced for answering my n00b question.

Refugium is a safe place to grow wanted macro Algae that help absorb unwanted baddies in the water.. Just better filtration. Its also a way to increase your water volume as well. The more water you have running in your system the more forgiving it is when you make a change ....
A fuge is also a great place to grow PODS which are a nutriant source for your display tank.

You could also do a search on "refugium" on google.com or in the "equipment and DIY" section of the fourms.
