Refinish tank stand

I want to refinish my tank stand before I set up my new tank. Is there anything I need to consider? I'll have an acrylic tank; can I use any commercially available stains? Thanks

Basing from my knowledge in woodworking, you can use any stain but make sure that you put polyurethane afterwards to protect the wood. The more coat the better.

Any stain or poly just make sure to let it dry for at least 48 hours or the tank
can get glued to the stand.

Wow! My first day I find a question that I feel comfortable answering! (I'm a professional carpenter.) Any good name brand stain will be fine, just follow the manufacturers instructions. After letting it dry for the required time, do pay attention to the temp and humidity where the stand is when you're working on it, apply a good polyurathane finish, the kind you brush on, NOT A WIPE ON POLY! Wipe on polys are great for some things, but the coat is very thin and will not give you the protection you need from saltwater. The instructions on the polyurathane will probably suggest two coats, sanding with a mildly abrasive pad between coats. I'd suggest three.
