I have half sand and half ecosystems mud about 4 inches. Works great. Lots of little critters and very healthy tank.

I used a 4+ inch sandbed of the Yardright playsand (same as southdown) for its ability to convert nitrates into a harmless gas, and chaetomorpha algea for further nutrient export.
works like a charm.
