What are the advantages of having one? Is it worth getting one in my 46-gal after 3 years?

Advantages include... larger water volume, having a place to harvest macro algae, having a safe place for small critters such as pods to grow and multiply, it's possible to add a DSB & more LR to further aid in nutrient export, and having a algae filled refuge lite opposite of the display's lighting will help stabilize PH. There could be more but that's what I can come up with off the top of my head.
IMO a refuge is a good addition to any tank.
