What size overflow are you getting? You need to know the gph of the overflow to match with the return pump. Let's see a pic of the sump if you can. That was fast!

You can do that, but it'll be skimming in the refugium and the pods might get chopped up in the skimmer pump unless you have a foam guard on the inlet. Make sure to wash it a lot so it doesn't hold nitrates.
