Refugium Mandarin

What is a refugium and how do you build one? I am thinking of starting a 10 gallon mandarin only reef tank. I need to build up the copods. I heard that a refugium helps?
I know you need 100lbs of live rock ect ect. I like a little challenge.

A ten gallon is too small for a mandarin even with a fuge. 100 lbs. of LR will not fit in it. Search the do it yourself forum and you will find out how to make a fuge, it is not difficult. I would rethink the mandarin in the ten gallon as there is about a 98-99% chance that the mandarin will starve to death.

Even with a refugium, its going to be REALLY tough to keep a mandarin in a 10g. Unless you get lucky and find one that eats frozen food, you won't be able to provide it with enough pods in a tank that size most likely.
9 times out of 10(or more), a mandarin will just slowly starve and die in a tank that size even if you have a refugium. If you want to do it, you're gonna have to go bigger almost definitely.

A refugium is essentially what the name implies it is a refuge for sessile inverts and delicate species from predation. In the fuge you will keep chaeto or another type of macroalgae to allow the pods to reproduce in without being eaten by fish. The fuge will have plumbing going into the main tank that constantly adds pods to the display. In the do it yourself forum there are numerous post on how to build one complete with diagrams.
