Refugium or Sump

a refugium is a chamber in a sump where there are things like a deep sand bed, chaeto algae, live rock that each serve their purpose. the DSB and chaeto algae help lower nitrates and keep algae out of the main tank. it also is a place for copepods to live and increase thier numbers to feed tank inhabitants like mardarins. it serves alot of purposes and to me is one of the best things out could have for your tank.
a sump is a tank under your main tank that has different chambers for different things...like a skimmer/heater area, a refugium area, baffles to eliminate bubbles, and a place to put filter media like bioballs and other stuff. it also increases your water volume and is the best filtration you can have other than live rock.
are you thinking of building/buying one?

A sump is a container that adds overall water volume to your tank and houses extra equipment out of site(short answer). A fuge is were you put extra sand, rock, cheato or critters that need a safe haven. Most of use it to help lower nitrates(cheato).

Thanks! I am thinking about building one, don't know what size to get for a 55 gallon tank though. They seem easy enough to build though.

Most recommend 30% of the DT if you can. Or as big is you have room for. The bigger the better.

This is what I have but instead of hanging it on the tank I put it on the sump. It would be better on the tank(other than the look) because the pods wont go in the pump.

Yeah I'll definately start looking into them. I recently lost all my fish in a period of two days. My corals, snails, starfish, shrimp, and crabs are all doing fine...I'm a little confused as to what happened. My tangs were in a tank way too small for them and they were covered in ich. Is there a way to treat ich in a reef?

Thanks, I was ready to give up and get rid of the tank there for a little bit. It's no fun when you just p*ss away all the money you spent on your fish.

Yup! I love the stuff and use it anytime I see a problem start or add new fish.
