Refugium Overkill

I have an 18 gallon nano that I want to clean up machinery wise. I want to put a sump and a refugium behind the system on the other side of a wall in a closet. I was wondering if anyone thought a total of 30 gallons for the sump/fuge would be overkill for this small of a tank.
Here is my opinion on it. It would make a larger volume for the DP to run on, It would give me more room for error as far as parameters go, it would give me more area to breed pods, and more area to add MacroAlgae.
Does anyone have an opinion on this that is against my opinions?

I see no problem at all but would like to ask if you were going to choose to use sand and rock in it as well? ;)
BTW its not overkill at all, its what we call a mini BangGuy system. :hilarious

If I were to attempt a nano reef...I'd try to provide as much additional volume via a sump/refugium as possible. Much more stability and it would provide additional filtration capacity. I think you have a heck of a plan. Best of luck...

Hilarious!:D Some of the large setups in restaurants and aquariums DO plumb their tanks right into the ocean, assuming they are on the beach, obviously.
If I did a nano, I'd want to plumb it into my 90g setup, which has about 120g with the sump and refugium. Nothing close to Bang, but, you know, it'll do.

I planned on adding a 5 inch DSB with southdown, but I forgot to stop in Cleburne this week on my way back from Houston to get some. I'll probably add some rock in there, I'm not sure how much I need to add, I'll have to look when I get the setup ready to go.
Squishy, I don't know how successful you would be at running plumbing to the gulf. I couldn't even make it through dallas this week without getting lost. Just imagine how well the plumbing would work. lol.

My 10 gallon has a 5.5 gallon refugium and I am all but overrun with pods and nitrates have always been zero. The bigger, the better.
