REFUGIUM STORY and MY BLUE TANG!

I am absoltely convinced that the refugium might be the most important part if my aquarium! Here is my story, I have had my refugium on my tank for about 3 months now and all i can say is how much of a difference i can see in both my fish and corals. My refugium is a HOB and is now filled with pods, Chaetomorpha algae, and Miracle Mudd, I am convinced that the Miracle Mudd contains minerals and trace elements, that cannot be found in water changes and crushed coral or LR. Here is some unfounded proof,, about 3.5 months ago my small blue tang started to develop bad pop-eye on one eye and some kind of skin problem (it looked like somebody dipped him in flour" i had no idea what is was but i knew when i got him that BLUE TANGS are subseptable to everything easily. My first thought was like im gonna lose him, because im sure everybody here has lost a many blue tang in thier fish career due to something, but only the rare few will admit it. After i put on the refugium, I swear he started to come back,, slowly,,then quicker,, the pop-eye went away so did the skin condition, and now he is the MOST agressive eater, BEST colored, Most Happy fish in the tank, I think he was telling me "thanks for saving my life" All my fish now have a deep natural color which i have never seen in my tanks before. Bottom Line: If you can afford to put on a refugium, go ahead and do it fast because i think it is the most beneficial thing you can do to your tank together with regular water changes and adding a protein skimmer. p.s my nitrates have come way down as well!

Yep, refugiums do wonders to a tank. I love my refuge, and I know it greatly helps in keeping the water as clean as possible.

glad the tang got better. quick question on the miracle mud, did u add it after the tank was established, and did you have any problems? ive heard nothing but good stuff about it.

I added the miracle mudd after my tank was established, in a HOB SM REFUGIUM PS from CPR, it settles after about an hour, then i just turned on the power head, adjusted the flow into the Protein Skimmer and VIOLA!! done,, Mine even came with a very nice hood and light! READ MUCH MORE AND STUDIES at ecosytemaquarium dot com and see the studies on the emperor angel and purple tang with HLLE.. good luck!

Yeppers love my fuge also...But I think my manderins love it more than me?Tangs too cause when the calupra overgrows and I feed it to the tangs they happy too... I throw all my stuff i dont wanna see in my main tank down there and it keeps my dt looking great...Ive cut my water changes in half.I dont think id run a reef tank without one. It makes that much of a difference. I mean if mangroves, seeweed, and clams can filter the ocean why cant it filter my tank too,and its all natural. It cheaper to build one than to by a uv sterilizer or any mechanical filtration and works better too!!

How much water flow do you have going to your fuge? I added one recently with about 25-30 pounds of crushed coral, 2 rocks, and a ball of chaeto. I have a hob overflow that I split and about 10% maybe of my flow goes to the fuge so I don't know if I am being effective with it. I heard the chaeto needs to tumble, do I need to add a powerhead or something? There isn't a lot of flow in there.

The Only water flow i have going to my fuge is supplied by my maxjet 1200, my tank is a 30 so i dont the know the math, concerning water flow by the power head, MY chaeto does NOT tumble and is growing quite nicely, but it does get oxygenated constant water flow, via the water that come out of the PS into the Fuge. How many gallons is you fuge? mine is only 3.5 gallons, but if yours is much bigger i would consider adding a SMALL PH, but im not sure.

I have a 29 gallon tank in 3 chambers. The water comes down two tubes from my overflow. They both combine but split to opposite ends of the sump. One side goes 1.5" tubing to where my skimmer and heaters are. They then go through the baffles (which suck in my case) and to the center chamber where my return pump is. The other side goes through a 1" tube to the fuge which is probably 12-14" wide, at least 12" deep (however deep a standard 29 tank is) and about 12" deep and flows to the center chamber. The Chaeto is definitely in a good place to get the running water out of the tube, it just isn't high flow. Sounds like I might be doing ok. it's slow but steady. I also have a 10,000k light on the fuge.

They have a really nice one on E B A Y for $239 that comes with the light and everything you need,, you cant but it with lights anymore because it was ruining CPR'S profit margin, you have to buy it separately now. I paid $250 plus shipping no tax,
