this is probably going to be the dumbest question of the day, but is a refugium just plants inside of the sump, or what? i have a sump and could use a way of getting rid of excess nitrates.

refugium's typically contain Live sand/Mineral mud and live rock,Macroalgae such as caulerpra etc..
some even put in mangrove plants

If you so a refugium search on this site, you'll find all kinds of drawings. They can be attached or separated though.

i have an oceanic sump that came with no directions, or at least that's what the guys from the aquarium shop said. the sump seems to be divided into 2 or 3 parts. the right side has an area that has the water dumping over a filter from the hose returns which also has bio balls in it, and in the middle is an area where the protein skimmer is located. on the left is the area which i'm unsure of, and am wondering if it is where the refugium is supposed to go. it only has a pump on the bottom, but the area seems to be sort of set aside, but for what i don't know.
