I found a small refugium that you hang inside your tank and it has a small powerhead on it to circulate the water. Are these any good? What excatly does it do? What all do you put in it?

Are you sure it is supposed to be inside the tank? I know they make small refugiums that hang on the back of the tank. They have small powerheads that pump water from the tank and then drains back into the tank. Some also come with small lights.

All types of things. A refuge is a place for things to live that are beneficial to the aquarium, but are usually eaten by other inhabitants. For instance, you could decide to put some microalgae in the fuge to stop other animals from eating it up. You could devise a way to put seahorses in them (if the flow is controlled correctly). If you place rock rubble in fuge you can get copodes and archropods to grow in peace. That type of stuff :)

They have box with holes in them that are supposed to serve as a fuge inside the tank. I like the hang on the back fuge, myself. I have a refuge in a 20 gallon below my 29. I have some microfauna and the cleaner clams with sand bed and rock rubble. But the hang on the back are good for limited space, and the inside the tank are good if you are really limited on space. I have used a plexi glass tank (with the holes) to introduce tank mates that I wasn't sure how the process was going to go.
