Refugium

Ok, help out the 'newbie'. Many of you talk about re(fuge)iums. I understand you use them to isolate live food like pods and live rock, but what else do you use them for? Describe to me how you have your (fuge) set up? Is it a seperate tank or set-up in your main tank? What equipment do you need? What substrate do you use? Is a sump the same thing? Ignorance is not bliss.

Thanks for the info.

tons and tons of posts in the DIY section on how to set them up. mainly a fuge's use is to export nitrates and phosphates by using a macro algae of some sort.

coraljunky,
...and this is kept where? Under your tank? It looks like it is in a cabinet. Why the multiple chambers? How big is your reef tank? Is this the same as "sump"? How exactly is this system setup in relationship to your main tank? Questions, questions...

Thanks renogaw, I will certainly do a bit more research on this topic.

Its in the stand of a 90g. First chamber is overflow water in and protein skimmer, then bubble trap. Second isthe fuge where I keep some frags, deep sand bed, live rock, etc. Last is the return pump area where I have more live rock and chaeto algae.
This is the filtration, no other sumps or filters. I dont even use a sock or filter. All natural.
