refugium

I am about to start one with my 125 setup...
my question is do you put a sand bottom in the refugium? I have an extra bag of southdown i could use... i have a 4'' dsb now in the actual tank. The refugium will be 15 gallons. I'd like to put some macro algea in it.
any suggestions.

For a 15 gal refuge I would add 1/2" - 1" of the Southdown and a cup or two from the display tank.
