Refuium LIghting

Can a regular old flouresecent bulb work well in a refugium? This is for copods, and youre basic Macro Algae. Its only about 3 gallons. Is there a better lighting spectrum for this purpose? Thanks

Many people have found that the Lights of America power compact florescent fixtures from Wal-Mart have done very well for refugium lighting. Although it is not strong enough and in the proper spectrum for regular aquarium lighting, it does very well for growing macroalgaes. As far as the 'pods are concerned, they don't require any light at all, and in fact prefer it to be dark, as they are nocturnal creatures.

I have a 10 gal rubbermaid container that I use as a refugium. I light it with a 20 watt plant grow bulb from Wally world. It seem to be working welll as I have to prune my macro's regularly

I have a 22 gal rubbermaid that is lit by one 15 watt and one 20 watt regular flourescent bulbs, and one 15 watt aquarium and plant flourescent. My razor and grape is growing like crazy and is pruned regularily. Pod population is good also. In fact, the purple coralline is growing faster in the refugium then in the display. I have heard that coralline doesn't grow as well in intense lighting.
