regal angel progress w/ pics

Well, it's been about six months since I've had my regal angel and he continues to show what a wonderful specimen he is. This fish was always one of the "unkeepables" when I got in the saltwater hobby 15 years ago in middle school. Better collection practices, husbandry, technology and other factors have shown that this delicate fish could thrive if given the right conditions. I should add that this is by far an endorsement to keep this fish, but rather encouragement that this species should not be grouped as it so often is with the true "unkeepables", like many of the strict polyp eatering butterflies like Chaetodon meyeri and Chaetodon larvatus (both of which are unfortunately sold on this site). A quick search shows that my experience is not abnormal... while the majority of these (and many other species) are bought by inexperienced uninformed hobbyists, there are many of these guys thriving in reef tanks out there. This is not to say they benefit from having corals around, but rather they benefit from the more pristine water conditions we generally keep in our reefs as opposed to fish only tanks.
A little background on my guy... I had seen many regals come in from the Red Sea to a local wholesaler/retailer that ships direct from around the world. They always sell very fast, and so I'd always try and feed them after they arrived with most showing justifiably little to no interest. This day they had gotten in three, and one showed no interest while the second looked but didn't touch. The third not only ate, but attacked the frozen Formula one I was feeding and I got a bit excited. He was wrapped up for a relatively cheap price of $85.
He went into my sps system, which also contains ricordea, clams, and fungia. I had removed all zoanthids to another system in preparation, as these guys love them. The others I would take a chance with (a relatively good chance though). Interestingly, within hours he had found every remaining patch of zoanthids left in the tank and mowed them clean... everything else was and continues to be left alone.
I feed him a variety of things, including Spectrum pellets, frozen gel angel preparations made with sponges, algae based frozen foods, plankton, mysis, squid (he gets noticibly excited with this), and other things. There's no doubt he benefits from these foods, but it's tough to quantify how much from any one food. He eats straight from the turkey baster by necessity, because he has to "outfeed" swarming cardinals and a peppermint hog among other things... down the road in my larger system I may try to pair it up, as this has been done with success to the point of nightly breeding dances in this tank .
As I said above, this is not a fish for everyone. Please do not buy one unless you could provide it with the care it needs. With that said, my friend who was over about a month ago e-mailed me these two pics he took of my guy... I made one my avatar...

Here he is duking it out at the turkey baster... I'll admit he is the only fish I feed in the tank, with all others getting what he misses:D ... this fish is on my short list for most beautiful fishes in the ocean...

I had the opportunity recently to see these guys for the first time in the wild while diving in Micronesia (Guam). I got this picture and luckily didn't attract sharks from the underwater dance I did after seeing this guy for the first time... note the difference in coloration between this one and my Red Sea specimen...

John, the tank has too many fish in there. I'll be over today to pick up the Tomini Bristletooth Tang that is being neglected.

Thanks guys...
liquidskys, this is one fish that shows lots of variation throughout it's huge range. I recently bought the new Scott Michael Volume 3 book featuring angels and butterflies (it's on sale at Amazon), and at the end they have a section dedicated just to the regal angel. It has AMAZING pictures of some variations, including an all yellow and white regal with NO blue... it's amazing and as striking as the queen angel variations at St. Paul's rocks if anyone has seen them. This is a MUST HAVE book for just $30 with free shipping...
bona... it's funny you say that... I grew up on a lake in Jersey and the most beautiful fish we'd catch was yellow perch... the majestic angel incidentally is on the short list too for most beautiful...
fishman, the only lps I have in the tank are one cycloseris sp. and one fungia sp, and he has not touched them. In general though with most large angels meaty lps are treats for them. Again this is on an individual basis.
Mr. tuna I'd love to hit the Red Sea... while the Pacific forms are beautiful, there is nothing like the Red Sea specimens...
Rik, I told you the tominis were just available again for the first time in a while... as for now... no soup for you
... in all reality the tomini tang I have gets many comments from local reefers (including the crazy Brit Leishman
). This is a beautiful alternative if you want a bristletooth tang without getting the standard koles or chevron... it's price isn't too bad either if you shop around.
Anyway I'm going to scan in some of the aberrant forms of the regal that are very striking...

The fish is absloutely beautiful...thanks for sharing. Obviously you are very informed and made the addition after careful consideration....very impressive.
Even more impressive is the fact that you take the time to share your experience with the membership here. We get a sweet two for one...information and experience on a stunning speciman...and input from a very experienced hobbyist.
Thank you for contributing...it is reefers such as yourself that continue to stimulate me!

Calvindo, I always say this, but "reef safe" is not an all or nothing designation, and research should always be done before buying any fish, but specifically when adding angels to a reef. Certain species have certain tendencies towards different groups of corals, and boards like this one are the best ways to start investigating those. When our house is built, I will use my frag system to test any new specimens for their personal tastes before placing them in my large system. Also, I have no idea what your experience in the hobby is in general, and specifically with touchy fishes, but I'd recommend to anyone that they be very confident in their abilities before ever thinking about getting a regal angel. I do not want to come off like I recommend these guys to anyone... not to discourage anyone but just to throw it out there. If and when you are ready to buy concentrate on the specimen you are buying...
Brad the foundation is layed on the new house, and it's slated to be delivered in January. The 180 will go right up in the new house and I will transfer all from the 65 into there. The big boy (~520 gallons give or take) that the room is being built for is a couple of years down the road. I want to do that tank up nicely and plan for a while... it's definately going to be up there in cost, and we are going from 700 square feet in our apartment to 3000 in the house, so as much as I hate to do it we have to furnish the darn thing first:D . On a side note congratulations on your new tank... where are you moving in NY? Anyway I'll be in touch...
NMreef thank you very much! I love to share my experiences, but they're still probably at about 1% of what you contribute, so thank yourself too... I have always relished this fish from when I got in the hobby in middle school 15 years ago. I was so excited to see accounts of the successes with this fish and how they accomplished it, so I figured I'd give mine firsthand. Did you see the link I provided with the breeding pair? Amazing isn't it? Incidentally nice pics and new camera... as I said in your thread it's time you get some new clams on that sandbed!!

Yes I got him at Roozens. All regals go fast, and the ones that are eating go even faster. If you are looking for one I'd give a call to Jos or Larry as soon as they get their Red Sea shipment in...
