I got a new blue regal in my reef tank...i know they like to get ich, but i was wondering...how he got it...also why he would catch it if my levels are perfect...there is no stress in the tank....im assuming since its not bad its going to go away..but who knows...i was wondering what you guys thought.

he got it for the stress of moving from one tank to another. once he feels safe it will go away. i had my hippo for about a year now and once in a while he still gets it. they are just prone to it. good luck.
ps. dont use any meds on him it will go away by itself.

i was just about to post the exact same thing when i saw your post...but i do know unless he brought it with him from wherever you got him chances are its been in your tank the whole time you just didnt realize it? has anything had ick in the past in your tank? it could be colonized in your tank.......i know where mine came from....i was an idiot and didnt pay attention to the tanks where i bought mine(well close enough attention..) and i went back the next day and saw a clown in the same set with it.....
but my question is how is the best way to handle this?? its only about a handful of specks on him and he hasnt lost color and he is eating very well, seems very happy playing around in the powerstreams, and swimming in and out of holes and caves, but i dont have a QT, and i have many many inverts..now i have seen one brand of "no ich" and that doesnt contain copper but id rather not use chems. unless i absolutely have to and id rather not turn my skimmer off to do so ...im worried since he is only a few days new in my tank and he is only 2-3 inches that if i freshwater dip him he'll die.. WHAT TO DO WHAT TO DO???!!!!!???? AAAANNNDDD!!!
if i do decide to freshwater dip him how long do i do it??
many sources say 2-4 minutes
a handfull of others say no more than 30 secs...
i know the process i just dont know the timing..im worried, i wanna control this before it becomes out of control :help:

:jumping: <<i love that lil guy

thats what i figured...my tank has had ich before....but it was only 2 fish, and they died..nothing else got it.....been about 2 months since...got the regal and he has it...but my other tang doesn't...nor do any of my other fish..i was figuring its from stress.....its been about 4 days since i've added him and hes just getting it...he took to the tank perfectly...extremely active the moment i got him....i was just making sure it was from stress...not an actual break out

No matter what ick is very common on Regal tangs. Ick will come and go on it for the first month or two. Once its gone it will stay gone for a while. How long i got no clue. As long as its eating you dont have to worry. If you got other fish in your tank they should be safe from the tangs ick problem (its not contageous).

yeah everyone looks very healthy, the foxface is vibrant as ever, the percula looks fantastic, and like i said its a very very very mild case, handfull of specks and a couple on her tail but full color and i just fed her on lunch/dinner break and she was almost outeating everyone and she is the smallest!!! anyway thanks for the reassurance im just worried she is one of my favs, and absolutely my gf's fav.....her last favorite died( flame angel) the tank wasnt ready for it and i was too impatient, that was a very expensive mistake, ive learned since then...lol

Soak your food in garlic, it will help get the ich off of your regal. If your running a UV it will then kill it in the water colum.

Everything i've read says not to put a UV on a reef tank, says it takes out stuff the tank actully needs.
and oh yes...i woke up this morning and my regal has it worse...arg!
hopefully he gets better

then i need some help here beth, i dont have a QT and id like to do the hyposalinity but i have a coral banded shrimp and a red general starfish as well as the cleanup crew.....im worried that if drop the salinity obviously the shrimp wont make it and maybe not the star either.....any other thoughts on what to do?? the ick from what i have observed has only shown up for about 3 days, and its not severe, just wondering the best way to handle this
i had a freshwater dip for my yellow tang a while back (4 months ago) and it worked wonders on the black ick, it was gone inside 3 days, then after the three days i did another 1 1/2 minute dip and it never returned ever!! i need to know what i can do, my QT isnt ready yet.....it hasnt cycled yet

Im not to concerned as a whole, ...i'll let the ich take its cycle in my tank...im not going to treat anything simply because if everything dies...im out a grand total of $70 in fish. Then i will let my tank set empty with just corals and verts for a month..then my tank will be ich free. Then i will in that time set up a QT tank for all new entering fish...if this is a need be event....just i've had ich ...like 4 times in the past year...and it doesn't freak me out anymore.....i've actully only lost 2 fish to ich...all of the rest have always come out of it and fought the ich off themselves.

why not learn how to control it when it happens, and not lose fish.....i have a lil more invested in my fish, but instead of restarting learn how to control it and if you lose fish you lose but you will learn something too. i dunno just a thought
heres a funny thought that crossed my mind:
what if when i had strep throat my parents said, naw ive only got 3 years invested, if he dies we'll leave his room empty and start over......hahhaahah im not challenging you, it just crossed my mind thought it was funny

LOL...Thats actully really funny.
But my problem is i have corals that are worth alot more then the fish, and i dont want to move them around and mess up my tank to catch 3 damsels, blenny, firefish, goby, and 2 tangs. They're not worth that much..and i do love them...but i hoenstly dont believe the ich will take all of them out....and if it does...atleast my tank will be ich free..and i'll never have the issue again
