removing ls

Ok.. well it's time to change my tank around. I currently have a 6" sand bend in place and I want to take most of that out and make it a ssb to about an inch or 2. Good thing is I only have a chromis in there.. I was thinking about just turning off my pumps throwing the chromis down in my fuge and removing the sand and waiting for it to settle along with a water change. And then put the guy back in when it's done. This sand bed has been in place for about 2 1/2 yrs so it definately will have a lot of disturbance. Would this be okay? thanks.

Sounds like a good plan as long as the only fish/invert is the chromis because you will get one large nitrate storm. Only other option is the complete removal of the sand and starting with a new sand bed. Chromis in fuge/rock in a rubber made tub, clean out the DT, add new sand, put the rock back in....test for a couple days..if no ammonia spike, then restart everything.
