I have 3 zoas on plugs and have just left them, you can cut the post at the bottom of the disc though if you want they are easy to snap off. My one plug is just about covered with the zoas now so I would just leave them on there and place or glue them where you want and they will in time completely cover the plug.

if the zoas are encrusted i trim around them as if it were a rock. Sometimes ill take an exacto knife and slowly remove it from the plug. It is the worst thing seeing frag plugs al over a fish tank...looks tacky IMO

thats what I do. I use a box cutter and go underneath them and cut off the size section I want. I never use plugs for zoa's but superglue them to a peice of live rock rubble. then you can just stick the rubble rock in between or next to the main rock you want them to grow on (and repeat over and over!). or you can cut a frag off and glue it directly to the rock you want it on.
