I'm not sure, But I would think because of the design, the water goes in, down the sides and back up the middle. I don't think the live rock only would let it work that way. Also I would be a little concerned about a small piece of rock rubble finding its way into the return and pluggine it up. One thing you could do, that may work is to fill the baskets up with the rock rubble, This way the baskets would be there to keep very small pieces of rubble from getting into the return, and the filter can work the way it was designed to.
