retro-fit Metal halides to wood canopy?

Just wondering if it's a good idea to put a retro fit kit into a wood canopy. i plan on DIY'n the whole thing. I would bolt the reflector directly to the wood if that was not going to be a problem. Only thing i'm scared of it the heat...will that cause an issue?
Also this will be on a 55 gallon. Should i get 2x250 or 2x175? i want to have no limitations.

Its fine to do it that way. Ive had it set up like that on 2 different canopies over the past 3 years with no issues. And the 250w are the way to go IMO.

Yep, just be sure that there is sufficient air flow in it to keep them cool. Reflectors are mandatory as well to reflect both the light and the heat. Make sure your wiring is secure with no open wire ends or frayed connections to avoid possibility of fire.
