so i got a 180 gallon tank w/a 40 gallon wet/dry sump that came with a 320 gph return pump..... because it was just a cheap one i replaced it with a 1270 gph coralife pump, what i am getting at is the pump i replaced has been sitting out 4 awhile and developed rust in it..... what can i do to insure that if i use it on a smaller tank that it wouldnt affect anything, or is it pretty much just a loss

I would just get rid of it if the rust was from pump parts that have been in the tank. If so, it sounds like a cheep pump that will not last long anyways. If I was to start a tank I would go with new. Now if the rust is from iron dust that is magnetized to the pump then clean it off if you can and use it.

Not really sure why any pump for water would have any iron material in it. Are you sure the rust is inside and on the outer casing. Also is your tank drilled, if so what is the rate of overflow?
