actually the national aquarium is cool, but it is way too expensive! thursday is like the discount day. but the staircase is really neat!
went to a little aquarium in point pleasant beach, NJ like a month ago, was really awesome. they have touch tanks and lots of tanks. they had cow fish tanks, sea horse tanks, and alligators. the only thing we didn't like about it was they had these sea lions in a tank tank. it was mostly long rather than wide, so all they did was go to the bottom and then go to the top, they seemed sad. but they had toys for them and they took them out of the tanks every 2 hours. overall the tanks were well taken care of and the reefs were impressive.

Well we don't have a public aquarium here in Cleveland that I know of besides what they have at the zoo. I'd rate that one pretty low, not because they have bad displays but because the building is way over crowded so it is basically impossible to enjoy them.

I've actually been to "Adventure quarium" - as it is called now, since it was sold by New Jersey state - and was sorely, horribly dissapointed. The displays are very small, dirty, full of aiptasia and cyano, and some of the labeling and information provided is just downright WRONG.
Another thing that shocked and irritated me was the timelines posted up everywhere.... they were all...religious. Inappropriate and out of place in a what is supposed to be a scientific institution.
Huge disappointment and wayyyy overpriced.

Maybe they're following their own timelines for their maintenance on the tanks. Ask them when they did their last water change and they might just tell you, "just 7 days of course...."

Dallas World Aquarium. Pretty nice. Granted it's more than just an aquarium. It's a Rain Forest inside a building, monkeys and all. They have a gigantic freshwater display tied into their rain forest display that consists of manatees, red-tail catfish, arapaima, and freshwater rays. Then underneath is a display for every major coral reef in the world, all very well taken care of. They even had a breeding project for "Ribbon" pipefish and Leafy Seadragons. Supposedly the city of Dallas is considering shutting it down because "it costs too much". I guess they'd rather spend their money on BMW's and Mercedes I'm sure. Education doesn't pay for their grandios home lives.
Fort Worth Zoo has a very small aquarium established. It suckssss. I have more going on at home in my tanks than they do with a working man's budget.

I'm the assistant manager here at the Ty Warner Sea Center. Nothing compared to The Shedd, my old work, but still fun.

There is no aquarium in houston, cant believe there isnt because houston is such a big city. There is a small aquarium in the houston zoo, but it isnt even worth going to see IMO.

I just returned from Amsterdam, where we went to the Artis Aquarium. Don not, under any circumstances, go to Amsterdam to see this aquarium. You can see cyano much cheaper at other public aquaria, or even in the nano tank in my kitchen.

Just imagine a slightly above average LFS and that is the D.C. aquarium.

kjr, I live in Phoenix. Wherebouts are you? I haven't heard anything about any aquariums but that would be amazing. I just go to the Ocean Floor to get my fill right now, lol.

Went to the NY Aquarium at Coney Island today.
Honestly, I was pretty disappointed.
Yeah, they have some huge tanks and huge fish, but if you're looking for reef or Pacific fish, the selection is pretty limited. I honestly enjoy my time more at a large LFS.
Visited Atlantis in the Bahamas maybe five years ago. Very cool. Lots of tanks, interesting setups, and its between a casino and a beach

Shedd is awesome. Unfortunately we don't have an aquarium in Michigan.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a couple of classics... Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas is unbelievable. We stayed there for a week and just walked around most nights looking at everything. Also, the aquarium in Mandeley Bay is really cool.

I went to the aquarium in Mandalay Bay in Vegas when I was there last week. While parts of it were pretty nice they had a display set up with some of the sorriest looking tangs I've ever seen. Underfed, with horrible HLLE. I thought about saying something but by the looks of their 19-22 year old "experts" it would have definitely been in one ear and out the other.

Shedd is the best I have ever been to.
Honolulu is pretty good. San Francisco is good. DC is not great. The one here in Denver is OK to good.
How about Monterey, CA? I have not been there for a while, but I remember it being pretty cool.
Oh and the one at Epcot Center is good too!

Remember that cool fw tank they used to have that was WAY overstocked but had some really cool fish.

Their is that landry's aquarium, they have a octopus, what would be a cool reef tank if it were in my house, not worthy of an aquarium however. Basically everything you see in their tanks you can either catch in the river next door. Or out of a lfs.
Galveston has a decent aquarium in moody. They have a neat kelp tank, and a massive "reef tank" that is a Fo tank, but it is pretty massive with alot of different fish and a lagoon tied in and stuff really fun.
