Rinsing sand

So my sand for my new set up came in a home depot bucket with some water in it from the previous owner. Its been sitting there for about 3ish weeks. Eveyone is telling me that I need to rinse it because it has died. How the hell am I going to go about rinsing 70 lbs of "dead sand"

from waht i know as long as there is water over the sand it should still be good. at most i would put some live rock in with the sand and a power head for a few weeks this should help to "clean" up the dead things within the sand

I am being told that since the bucket was almost full it has sufocated the sand and killed it.
I am about to buy some precured rock from a friend and was going to cycle my tank with that.

yes the sand you have is now dead, the best way to wash it off is to stick the garden hose in the pail and let it run through it. mix it around with your hand and when it starts to run clear over the top of the pail you will be good to go.

Oh my no! Don't use the hose! The sand is not dead if it has been kept wet. Use salt water. Dump the excess water from the top off the bucket. Add saltwater. Swish it with your hand, dump the water. Repeat it several times. If you have a larger, flatter tub to do this in, that would give you more room.

If you run the hose over the sand, it will be dead for sure

That sand is still just as alive as you and I. It may be stagnant if it has not had any flow or movement, but I assure you that if it has been wet, there is life in there. Stir it up slowly with some new sw, (did Sep just say this?) and add it.

Stir the sand and if it is black looking at the bottom and/or has a rotten smell like eggs you will have to rinse it. If it was sitting outside I wouldn't risk using it as it could have picked up any number of polutants such as insecticides, acid rain, etc. Not worth the risk to your livestock.

I would honestly rinse it even if it didn't smell. You will be able to get the loose debris out of it, not to mention trapped nitrate reduction. It has already been disturbed if it was a DSB, so no harm in getting rid of as much tank pollutants as possible. I don't think this sand has been sitting outside, the OP didn't say so anyway. We will have to let him/her answer that one.
T316, Sep may have said something along those lines but I am sure she just knew you were going to mention it and wanted to agree prior to you actually posting it

No is has been in a garage with a lid on it.
Thre is so much contraversy on this subject. Everywhere I look there is someone saying something different.

I really don't know what to do now.

I have re-used sand that has been in a bucket for months. Just mix up some fresh saltwater, rinse it til most of the gunk is gone and pour it in your tank. It will be cloudy for a bit, but will settle and be fine.

I have decided to rinse it fully with fresh water and then let it dry out on a tarp. I figured I may as well start from scratch since there is no definate answer to re using it.
What can I do to jump start the sand when i put it back in the tank

I would agree if it was only in the pail a few days but it has been in the pail for almost a month with a cover on it in a garage, that tells me that if it was live it sure isn't now.

I am gonna take some from my 12g nano. it's been running for about 7 months now so it should be good and seeded.

I rinsed it out today and let it dry.

I ended up having to use 2 buckets when it was dry because it was so much more fluffy!!! 70 lbs of sand ready to go
