I was looking at the 30 dollar Rio Powerheads on this site for sale. They say they pump around 600gph. Has anyone ever had expeirence with these powerheads?
Thanks.

Lot of posts saying Rio's are junk but there are a few that swear by them. If it's quality you want, there are better PH's out there such as Maji-jet and Tunze. If you do go with Rio's, there's a good chance you'll be replacing them sooner than if you had a quality PH.

True. Well Currently I have 2 maxi-jet 1200's. And 2 powersweeps, largest model (270gph). But I think I still need better water circulation than that. Mag12 is my return pump.

If you are looking for some bang for your buck try modding your maxi jets. I have some seio's they seem to be a pretty good bang for your buck.

Alright rather than posting a new thread with pretty much the same question here is my next thought.
After viewing a lot of full tank shots I notice on the majority of them two very large powerheads, one in the top back left corner, and one in the top back right corner of the aquarium. Seems like a good idea for effective waterflow, can anyone shoot me a link to somewhere that sells larger powerheads?

I have two rio powerheads in my tank One Rio 600 running a Rio motion and a 2500 running my protien skimmer I have had both for about a year and I have had no trouble with them and I am very happy with the quality.

If you do not like the look of PH's in your tank, you may want to consider closed-loop system. Advantages: One pump, keeps electrical out of tank, keeps heat out of tank, cleaner look inside tank. Disadvantage: possible leaks but highly unlikely, extra plumbing, DIY (i consider it an advantage because its cheap, others don't want to do the work). Check out these CLS:

Personal choice, but an option you may want to consider.

I use a rio 2500 as my return pump and am completly satisfied.
I know the older rios had a ton of problems, mostly because they were oil filled and would burst or leak oil but the newer ones are epoxy filled and have no oil. I think the rio company is going to be getting bashed for a long time for their design flaws on their earlier models.
I also have a rio 2100 on my Fw planted tank as a return pump fromt he wet dry.

I have a RIO 2500 and no problems whatsoever with it. And it is less noise then a the 2 maxijets in my water mixing container. Oh, make that 1 maxijet since one failed on me after 2 months. Hmm, maybe there is a problem with maxijets, they seem to be build a little cheap on the housing.
Some people should not make posts about equipment unless they have experience with that equipment and not what they have read.
There are many pumps that I have no experience with and won't comment on whether they are good or bad.

I have a closed system and the only way it could leak is if the tank burst. My fuge/sump is built into the tank. The return to the main part of the tank is not unsightly. No extra plumbing, in fact no plumbing at all and no extra work.

I agree. Forgive me for not going into detail about my experience. I had three Rios, one which quit on me and the other I had to return to get a replacement. I mentioned the other posts because they helped me make the decision to switch knowing that I wasn't the only one having problems. You're not having problems with your Rios and that's great. I'm sure there are plenty of others. Wish I had that luck. Would've saved me some money and relieve me from frustration. I mentioned Maxijets because my neighbor swears by them and has had no problems at all after 3 years. I no longer have any PH's in my tank and am running Mag drives for both my CLS and Sump. I removed them also to control heat because it gets hot out here in the summer time. I also prefer the look of the tank without PH's all over the tank.
After reading hundreds of posts, it appears to me that this forum is designed to allow people in the hobby the opportunity to express their "opinions", whether justified or not, without repercussion from others and with all respect for others opinions whether you agree or disagree as there is no one way to make the perfect tank nor is there one perfect powerhead that fits everyones needs. That's what makes this forum fun and informative. Opinions differ in every single category in this forum and it's up to the individual to get all the information he can, dissect it, and come up with a decision that suites his or her needs. I don't, in any way, claim to be an expert. Just sharing my experience.

Some long lived low cost ones IME Hagen's aquaclear units. And as knight said Closed loops can get quite the effect.
