Rio pumps Anyone having trouble with failure?

I keep reading and hearing little things about the Rio 2100 failing and destroying tanks. I have just purchased a Remora Pro which comes with a Rio pump, I think an 800.
Anyone here having trouble? Any recommendation as to what would be a good pump to replace the rio 800?
Thanks,
Connie

There was a discussion here a while back and it seemed like the Rios were not held in high regard. Someone rightly so did say they are one of the most sold so therefore their failures would be more known by fishkeepers. If you want go to the search feature and put in rio pumps and it should come up for you. I tend to like the Hagen series of powerheads have had many and never a failure.

I just dumped my rio1700 put on a mag 5 on my EV-90 I DIDNOT like the rio at all you may wish to spend the extra money on a mag 3 for that skimmer imo, i found they run more stable and they are very very quiet. goodluck. Missy

I have a rio 2500 & a 400. Both seem to be decent, for the price. Stay away from Red Sea brand pumps. Just got one with a berlin skimmer, and it's a NOISY little sucker(sounds like there's a refrigerator motor in the stand now :( Good luck,

I also have the Rio 800 which I use for circulation. I did have to bring the first one back due to the fact that it was pretty noisy. The one I have now seems just fine.

Thanks for all of the responses. I have inquired with one of the major online equipment company regarding this issue. I want them to tell me what their experience and perception is of the Rio pumps. It will be interested to see what they tell me. If there response is interesting I will post it. Missy coral thanks for the suggestion of an alternative. I can not see the reason not to replace a $30ish dollar pump if it might destroy my several hundred dollars worth of coral.
Thanks to everyone!

To those who have had meltdowns - were you using a GFI outlet? That should stop the electricity before anything gets a chance to get hot enough to melt the innards of the pump. Let me know if my thinking is wrong because I have a Rio on my Remora Pro and will replace if the GFI is not a solution.
Thanks!

I have had a rio 2100 for about 4mos now. I'm definitely interested in finding out your results. If I should replace mine I will.

I heard back from the large on-line company about the rio pumps. They said they knew of many failures in the larger pumps. However, they knew of no failures in the smaller Rio pumps. They stressed that all pumps should be hooked up to a GFI type of circut so it will shut off it failure occurred. They also recommended purchasing the UL models.
Lastly they stated that rio pumps are sold 10 fold over any other type of pump.
So interesting.............

I've been using rios for years. Once I had one fail and the GFI tripped. It was a 2500.
Now I'm currently using 600's for circ. and a 1100 for u.v. ster.

They must do something right I have been waiting for a back order ona Rio 400 for weeks now. The 8 watt UV I have suggested it as the best pump for the UV so I went with it, but am still waiting for the Rio. After reading those earlier posts I was not thrilled by using Rio but could not find the right fit with the others I tried to attach the UV to.

i have a 2100 submersible for my uv and it seems fine so far. my little 800 is dying though. i bought it used with my skimmer though so i dont know the age of it. anyway a low amp rated g.f.c.i. should protect against a locked rotor condition in the pumps. this talk of melting motors is pretty scary. check their operation monthly if possible and try to filter their inlets. unfortunatly there is a lot of cheap equipment on the market.
