Lost my blue linckia starfish today. Pretty bumed. He's been in the tank for 2 weeks. He was all over the place the first week and then kinda hid under the rocks the second week so I was looking for him this morning and noticed 2 of his legs had pretty much completely disenegrated(sp?) and in the process of losing more so im assuming hes a goner.

I am sorry to hear that. How did you acclimate him? What are your water parameters for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, SG, and temp? What sized tank is this and how old is the system?

I temp acclimated him and then drip acclimated him. Parameters are fine.
Salt-1.024
Ammonia-0
nitrite-0
nitrate-0
phosphate-0
ph-8.0
calcium-400
System is three months old. 55g

the salinity is a little low and the tank is not mature enough also the tank is way to small too

i agree with this statement. stars need a mature tank with lots of room to roam around and eat

How long did you acclimate him? This is not a case of starvation (although he would have anyway) this is a case of acclimation shock. Stars need (especially Linkias) 4-5+hrs of drip acclimation. They also require an SG of 1.026. For future reference, most stars need mature systems, LOTS of mature LR, a higher SG, and long acclimation times. A system under 8 months old and under 70lbs of mature rock cannot usually support most stars. Blue Linkias need 100+lbs of mature LR. They will not accept prepared foods.

I wish lfs would stop selling these stars to people without finding out tank sizes, age of setup and acclaimation procedures  Between stars and mandrins these creatures don't have a chance of survival. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE research before buying

Ain't that the truth. Our local LFS sold my dad a mandarin as his first fish. And yes, they knew the tank was only 5 weeks old. They told him "oh no he'll be fine, he'll eat algae off the sides of the glass"
So I turned his ass right around and made him take it back and get 2 chromis instead.

Sorry to hear about your starfish. What type of coral do you have that is white with the purple spots. Thanks.
