DISCLAIMER: The following may be considered boring by some of you, to prevent this, scroll down and look at the beautiful and amazing pictures.
I recently had the opportunity to go to this aquarium. My thoughts on it are all very good. I will do a comparison to the aquarium that have been to the most: Shedds.
Well here are the strong points for Ripley's:
1. More Rays (yay!)
2. The displays are more informative and the filtration system, better explained.
3. A seemingly larger variety of "big fish" species.
4. A more elaborate and cool tunnel display complete with those annoying moving sidewalks. (Well in most cases this would be annoying, but due to the crowd size, it was a good thing).
5. I believe they have 1 more leafy seadragon than Shedd's (which are among my favorites as well as rays).
6. They have a really cool tank with a large dip in the middle starting at the bottom in it so that little kids can crawl under and be "inside" the aquarium with the fish.
Here are the strong points for Shedd's:
1. Vast variety of fish (more small species) as well as a large variety of reptiles and aquatic mammals. Ripley's has no aquatic mammals I do not believe. Go DOLPHIN'S! And penguins and lizards are cool too.
2. WAY less crowded (but it may be Labor Day Weekend to blame).
3. The staff is much more active as far as putting on Dolphin shows and such.
4. The displays are interactive, so if I forget or want to know the name of a fish, I can select it and see. Whereas at Ripley's, you have to watch the screen and wait or go without.
5. A lot more coral and beautiful peaceful reef displays
They are both excellent aquariums and you should try and visit them in the future. Which one is my favorite of the two? I won't say. But I will say this, neither is better. They are both just a bit different. As for kids though, unless they are really into fish, Shedds would be the better idea. This is because to a lot of little kids, a fish is a fish. At Shedds they can see dolphins, penguins, and lizards galore. However if you are into sharks, Ripley's is the place to go because they have a lot more sharks and rays.
Now, the reason you really came to look at this thread PICTURES!
I'm the in gray, this thing was epic!
