Ripped off by my lfs!

You didn't get ripped off, it was consensual.
He's not ripping people off unless he's misrepresenting what he's selling. If he's claiming Phillipine Yellow Tangs are Hawaiian, that's a rip. If he's putting SeaClone 100s in 150 packages, that's a rip. Charging more than anyone else is just a business decision.
I hope you researched the care of those fishes a lot better than you did their price.

way to many ***** to answer a question like this. Also this could vary from week to week. You need to look at the fish and determine there health on an individual basis just like you would any where. I don't care where you buy the fish, every fish they sell will not be healthy, just impossible to do so.

My lfs here is about the same in prices and it is VERY HIGH prices.I live in a small town where this is the only LFS so they can get away with it.
If I'm willing to drive 80 miles I can fo to other LFS and pay less than half of the price.Sooo about twice a month I drive the 80 miles and get everything I need to avoid those high pricees.

Where do you live and what store do you drive the 80 miles to?

I bought two false percs from a ***** last week. My normal lfs didn't have any, every time I went in they were sold out. So when I went to ***** they had lots of false percs, so I took two home. They are in my QT tank and doing great. Like the one post said, most every store, no matter if it's a chain or local is going to have sick fish. They key is to QT for 3-4 weeks and you will know if your fish is sick or not. Also, ask what they feed the fish and see if the fish will eat right in front of you before you take it home.

Maybe. But you'd think if he wanted me to come back for more, he wouldn't have stuck me with something 2x the size without at least warning me.

I dont see how he is ripping you off. Are his prices high? Yes, extremely high compared to prices around here. But he is not putting a gun to your head and forcing you to buy from him.

one thing I havent seen posted yet is it also varies to what the overhead costs are.
it may only cost the LFS 10$ for somehting and then they charge 30$ for it thats a 300% mark up but what is their cost for the building they are in? the cost for emplyoees? the cost for equipment? the cost for utilities? the cost for everything including the inventory thats sitting on the shelves? There is a lot that goes into the mark up at these places and I understand completely do some of them raise the price super high to make a pretty profit I am sure some do but there is a massive mark up just for the reasons above. Also unlike SWF offering a arrive alive garuantee the LFS' usually arent afford that meaning anything that dies in transit is there problem and lose which effects the price of the shipment aswell.

yeah he got you on that skimmer....but he had to mark it up to make his money but you know he is getting stuff at a discount no matter how many he orders...so that 179 is crazy...i would pay a little extra for healthier fish but i wouldnt pay 2 or 3 times more...i would take my chance with another store...when i first started i bought a pair of ocellaris from 2 different LFS paid about 40 bucks for each pair...both pair died...went to ***** and got a pair of maroons for $30 and they are still alive and well today
