Wanted to share my expiriences with the board for reference =).
I've had my 30g reef up for 2 years now. Always have had slight algae problems, but nothing too bad. Eventually the algae just kept building up and I was having trouble keeping my hard corals happy. Lights were only on for about 6 hours a day, NO3/PO4 were reading 0, had a phosphate reactor running, a sump with macro algae growing like crazy, was well underfeeding my fish, and had an AquaCRemora running on it too. I was stumped why I had an algae problem. My tap water had tested out with zero phosphates and no silicates.
Before I went to school I switched to filtered water from a LFS. I figured it was a last ditch effort. Algae didn't really go away, but I made sure that was all my dad used to fill the tank up. Literally over the course of two days a couple months later all the algae just disappeared. Gone. Water is crystal clear, and hard corals are doing amazing. Amazing what that $.45 a gallon does... wish i would have tried it right from the start.
