RO/DI Help!

I finally realized that I have to stop doing top offs with tap water. I am looking at RO/DI units and I am completely lost. I find them on ---- for hundreds cheaper that LFS and various other sites. Any recommendations?

I bought mine from , but I've heard the air-water-ice units are decent enough. The thing you have to watch for on that famous site where you bid on stuff is non-standard cartridges, but I don't know how commonly the oddball units are found.

I believe you get what you pay for . . . now that doesn't necessarily mean that you have to buy the highest priced item, and that a lesser priced item isn't any good.
I have a AWI Typhoon III, and it was around $200 from the manufacturer. I have heard that Water General brand RO/DIs are good, and tend to be less than the AWI units. Kent makes a unit too, again I believe less than the AWIs.
Undoubtedly you can get a very cheap unit from you-know-where-bay, but as SCSI mentions, is that the best deal in the long run? If it doesn't work well (>0-TDS) or you have to pay more for rare/odd-sized membranes, you could easily end up paying more over time.
Check the threads (There's about a bajillion on RO/DI units) and look for positive comments on particular brands, find the one that suits your needs, then seek the best deal on that unit.

another question- do they have to be installed into existing sinks or pipes? i rent and did not want to install anything that i would have to rip out later. i just wanted something to treat the water and put away until i need more.

At Air Water Ice, you can get your unit with the hose connector. Then get the Y hose adapter (you can find those at any hardware store). I have mine connected to the cold water faucet of my washing machine....
I got the Compact Reefer, perfectly happy with it....for 139...think after shipping, the float valve, and they hose adapter, I paid $179...had it in less then a week.
And it came with a TDS meter...

When you buy from AWI, you get a choice of either a gardenhose style adapter (As maelv mentioned and what I use too), or one to adapt to a standard kitchen sink faucet (As long as it has the typical spout, it won't fit on a sprayer type). The waste-water tube can then be stuck down the drain.
If your apartment has a laundry area, I suggest putting the unit there as it would be out of the way, although set up temporarily on an as-needed basis in the kitchen is workable.
