Ro/di questions?

I am a 15 year old broke kid that needs an ro/di filter. So I devised a plan. My dad drinks a lot of bottled water and loves ro water which is lucky for me. So I halfway convinced him to buy a filter. Now I just need to figure out how it can help him save money. So, now we have well water, that is softened (water softener) then filtered through a whole house filter. If I got a 4 stage 75 gpd ro/di can you give me an estimate on how many gallons it would produce before the filters needed changing? Any sort of rough estimate. I would have to get a tds meter to find out the actual numbers. Can we drink ro/di or just ro? I would get the di just for reefing, but does ro/di taste good? I need to do some math to prove to him that it is worth it and that it will make life easier. Thanks.

you can't give an estimate because everyone's water is different. ro/di should taste fine.

Hmm. I was afraid of that, well the fact that ro/di tastes fine helps. Thanks for the input.
How often do YOU change your filters?

i have changed my filters on my 100gpd unit after roughly 8 months of use. making about 50-60 gallons a week.

Don't use RODI water for drinking-it is too pure, so it is tasteless. Most RODI systems have DI bypasses so that you can make RO drinking water, which tastes fine and extends the life of the DI cart. I make about 3 gallons once per week, and 30 gallons monthly, and am on my first set of filters after 14 months.

I think I have him convinced. I did the math (more than I expected) and I figured savings if we changed the filters every month and it came out that we would save like 50 bucks a year this year and like 200 next year. Of course the savings should be more since we shouldn't have to replace them monthly.

it's not the best to drink ro water because you don't get flouride and those other things the government adds, but it's not unhealthy to drink it. actually, i think it's healthier.

I've been drinking my RO/DI water for over a year now... I cook with it also. It's fine. IMO, you get plenty of minerals and nutrients from the food you eat to more than make up for the trace amounts which would be in tap water. Because RO/DI water is so pure, you end up drinking less of it... Osmotic pressure man...
