Hello, I have a 400L tank. I am currently setting up my water making station and reservoir.

What size water drums do you think I'll need? And how many?

I'm just totally at a loss as to what size I will need in future and which will be easiest for me to manage water changes etc..

The drums will be stored away from the tank in a separate room.

Something big enough to at the very least hold the water for a typical water change. I have a 125 gallon tank and use a 35 gallon drum. My water changes are typically 25-30 gallons. I also have a 28 gallon container that I keep RODI water in for emergencies. In my opinion you are better off with something bigger than you need so you can do the occasional larger water change.

Ah right, I was thinking of getting a large bucket which I can then put on a dolley.

Because I'm also having trouble finding a nicely shaped food grade bucket with wheels (no brute or Rubbermaid where I live, only farmers food grade barrels). Does anyone know is grade 2 plastic is ok? HDPE?

For my 120g system I have a couple of 32g food grade (Brute) cans as well. But usually only use one.

Typically I'll just set one next to the tank on a Saturday, fill and mix it then do my water changes on Sunday.

I have a separate fresh water top off tank under the stand that constantly replenishes whatever evaporates.

Just an update in case anyone wanted to know, I'm using HDPE (grade 2 plastic). I gave the buckets a vinegar rinse and then an RODI scrub.

1L of water sitting in it for 2 weeks and tds remained at 0-1ppm :)
