RO/DI Units

Here are a few pics of my set-up with the ro/di that you saw down by the bay. My set-up has the 55g tank in the basement, below the kitchen. my ro/di unit sends the RO/DI water to my 55g tank with a float valve to auto shut off the unit when it's full, you can see it in the right corner. The Ro water for my faucet dosn's go through the DI part. It gose throgh a carbon taste/oder remover filter. This is the same unit you saw (6100 6 stage)
When my tank is full, I add a bag of salt and turn on the pump and walk away. When I wan't to do a water change I close the valve in the tank and the pump pumps the water to the open valve at the main tank's sump, all I do then is run a syphon and Vaccum the main tank WHILE the sump is being filled. Think of it as a water transfution. My tank never gets shut down this way.
They call this a 6 stage unit, but it's only a 5 stage (kinda) your water will go through 4 filters then depending on if it gose to the tank or faucet it will go to eather the carbon filter or the DI filter. you might be able to see the BLACK hose going up in the middle, thats the drain, the BLUE line is the RO/DI water, to the tank and the CLEAR by the copper supply line is drinking water. RED is Supply.
This is a 110g per day unit and has a rejection rate of 98-99% I'm very happy with it and it cost less then 150 for the compleate setup (not including the tank, pump and plumbing to the sump)
hope this helped
BTW Tank is a 125 sump is a 70 show and ro/di tank is a 55
also my unit makes about 40g in 24 hours at about 65psi water pressure. (the higher the pressure the higher the GPH) I Think the max PSI is like 120, Who has water pressure like that??? I think thats were they get the 110gpd :notsure: if you want 100gpd you wont be happy with this unit.

Thanks for that Kalinex. Couple of questions though:
1) I'm confused what you do with the 55g - I see that it fills up with RO/DI water and that there is a pump there that looks like it pumps into the sump. When does this go on and for how long??
2) You mentioned while you clean your tank, you turn the RO/DI directly into the display tank?? Can you clarify this, I don't think I have it right.
3) Most importantly - you mentioned that you are very happy with the unit. How long have you had it, and have you tested the water after? If so, is it 0?
Thanks, again.

Okay,
The 55g tank holds the ro/di water that is AUTO filled by the unit and a float valve. When it is full I shut off the supply of ro/di water and add aprox. one bag of salt mix. then I turn on the pump in the 55g tank and let it mix for at least a day before using it. (I also heat it at this point)
from this point on it is a Saltwater ro/di tank and NO new water will be added by the unit. (lift the float valve or install a shut off)
When It's time to change water in the main tank I Close the Valve in the 55g tank, and open the valve in my sump. The flow can be set to match your syphon rate with the ball valve at the sump. Then all that is left to do is syphon / clean the main tank. All WHILE still maintaning the same water level in the sump AND main tank.
You would need to time how long it takes to do half of the 55g tank so you know when to stop. in less your doing 55g water changes.
At this point you can leave the remaining for your next change, or turn on your ro/di unit again and refill the tank. Only now you add half of bag.
I'm not sure I understand your second question. A ro/di unit only makes like 2 gallons per hour. This is why you would want a holding tank for you ro/di water. This way you can just let it make water when you don't need it. So you have water when you do.
I am adding a second line that will be tee'd into the RO/DI float valve line. this will go to my sump with a secon float valve. This will Auto top off my sump to make up for any evaperation. The 55g tank would fill first, then if the sump needs water it will go upstairs and top off my sump. when everything is full the unit will shut down untel the 55g tank needs water, the sump needs water, or someone gets a glass of water and uses the water in the 3.5g pressure tank.
It may sound complex. But really it only took a saturday to install EVERYTHING. and that inclueds getting the 12pk of MGD'S.
I have had the unit for aprox 3 MO. and have not tested it. yet. BUT the DI part of the filter changes from green to black when its used up. and mine is about half way there. You can buy new media for it at the bay. and the is a VERY noticable differance in tast at the faucet.
hope this helped.

come on man! just joking. i would also recommend the airwaterice typhoon models. i bought the 75gpd model and have been very pleased.

With the Typhoon models is it still required to have a big holding tank like that. With my setup I am very limited for space so I can really setup a second tank just to hold water.
What other systems do people have setup with their ro/di filters.

an easy way to do a holding tank would be to get a big plastic trashcan on wheels. let it fill, add salt and a powerhead, and then water will be ready for the next change.
