Hey... just wondering.... does your RO/DI water stink? I poured a glass of water tonight and the water has a hint of nasty butt. It kinda smells like rotten fish or something but its less than 2 weeks old. Is there something wrong with it?
I am new to this.. so dont laugh to hard... but can you drink RO/Di water? Meaning... they sell ro units for sinks, but can you drink from an ro/di unit?

Water definitely shouldn't stink coming out of the RO/DI.
Did you let it run for a while? Check your model's directions but I believe each one will tell you to discard the first several gallons of water it makes when you first start it up or if it has been in stoarage for a while.
As for drinking it, I've heard you aren't supposed to drink RO/DI. Something about it being to "pure" to be healthy as is deosn't contain any trace elements. That' all I've read though so don't quote me on that.

What is less than two weeks old...?
The filter, water you have had in a bucket/jug ???
Are you sure your not collecting the waste water instead of the filtered water ??
Drinking RO is generaly safe because there are still a small amout of minerals still in it, but not recomended to drink alot of DI because it pulls minerals from the body/skin/stomach and can cause helth problems over time, Because of it low density ( known as hungry water ) it can also do this when running thru copper pipes or sitting in a container, pull chemicals from the container into it.

The Di unit is only 2 weeks old. I am going to get the instructions out and make sure every hose is where its supposed to. I am almost postive it is. Yeah, if I turn the unit on, pour the water into a glass and smell it... it smells like a hint of dead rotten fish.
It may be malfunctioning. I have had a huge algal bloom ever since I started using the water.

I am not drinking it either... just was curious as to why it does stink.

I just checked all the hoses and they are all connected as they should be. Should I take the unit back? I guess I can try doing the membrane flush that it says to do once a month. I havent ever done this, but then again its only 2 weeks old. I dont see any contact info for coralife or anythign online as to contacting them.

It sounds to me like you didnt purge your filter when you first hooked it up. There are preservatives and such on the filter which is probably what is causing your algae bloom and the odor. I have to fill my storage tank and empty it three times whenever I get a new filter.

stagnant water in the RO... very likely. I discarded the first 10 gallons or so as the instructions said, but didnt flush the membrane or anything. When I filled the last 2 cups of water or so... i just turned it on and pourd it into a cup. I guess I can try letting it run for a second then fill the cup up. So, should I flush it and then try again?

This is an issue that maybe needs to be addressed to the manufacture, if a flushing has not corrected it. My RO manufacture unit people are great with questions. (Shame it's a Holliday weekend.) The algae bloom seems to say something may be wrong somewhere. Where are the nutrients to feed the bloom coming from??????
Good luck and let us know what you figure out!

one more quick question... should I discard 10 gallons evertime i use it, or just the very first time i hooked it up?
I know it sounds like stupid question but either I am doing something wrong or it is.

THANK YOU GUYS!! :jumping:
I did a really long flush of the membrane and let it run for a little while and the stench is gone. So.. i guess i will let it run for a minute or 2 next time before using it for water changes.
THANK YOU!!
