Ro/di

I am at the planning/reading stage. My drinking water supply is 'local delivery' via tank truck. The pH is 8.2 and Hardness runs about 300ppm. I use it for cooking but it tastes a little 'off' so I buy Culligan water in 5 gal bottles for drinking.
The question is whether an RO/DI system is a good investment? Are the replacement cartridges less colsly than the $1/gal the purchased water costs? I could use it for both fish tank and human consumption.
