It basically filters tap water into almost pure h20. It removes particles & actually seperates the bad water(brine) from the good water though a membrane. It is highly recommended by most SW aquariums experts to use RO water. So why not buy a unit yourself instead going through the trouble of buying at a store & handling it. mI can't really recommend one since I don't have one in my hands. However I just ordered one of that site on the bay. I bought this one 320004799149 it will be here on Thursday. For freshwater you do need to add some things before using, however with SW I believe the salt mix will take care of everyhting.

I have the Typhoon III which is a great filter and easy to use, has made a tremendous difference in my water quality-HOWEVER-the filters have to be replaced regularly so this is an ongoing expense. My DI only lasta a couple of months since our water is so heavily loaded with minerals, but we also use it for drinking water. There is a lot of waste water with these units so if you have to buy your water, you may want to consider the cost vs purchasing the water already made up somewhere. We are on well water so do not have any costs other than the power to pump the water up from the ground.
look at the Gallons per day to see what size you need. I run mne into a 30 gallon rubber trash can which takes about 12 hours to fill, then add my salt and a power head to mix. This gives me two water changes. When you use the RO water for your top off in the sump or tank, you do need to add some buffer first to keep the ph up. Other than that, your salt mix adds back whatever you need during water changes.
