Im new to this hobby and Im still planning my aquarium out. I will be building a mini reef in probally a 55 gallon tank.
Iv been doing some reading out of a book and on this website. AS of now i just have 1 quick question im sure more will follow lol..
Instead of spending over a hundred dollars on a RO system could i just used purified bottled water by the gallon?
I will be using live and live rock.
Thanks

Yes, you can use bottled purified water, not the bottled drinking water though or Spring water.
Depending on the size of your aquarium this may or may not be economical.

To throw in my .02, the RO/DI filter was the best investment I made. I didn't really want to lug 75 gallons of water home from the grocery store the first time, then 10 or so per week for water changes and top offs... the 150.00 i spent on the RO/DI filter saved me who knows how much in time. (not to mention my back!)
So there are my .02 cents about if you should buy an RO unit.
Cheers!

RO/DI... best way to go for reef.
I hear a the local LFS talking to another guy and the LFS guy said all he uses is tap water.... Looking at his reef tank, I can see that... Corals and everything look terrible :)

You can get RO/DI units for $80(dont think I am allowed to say where)....not that expensive considering how much money you would spend on purified water over the years.

Initial water quality is a very important step when establishing a new aquarium. If you don't want to purchase and install either a RO filter or a RO/DI filter then I'd suggest looking for a local source of RO water. Most large grocery stores and some national chains have vending machines that dispense RO water for about .25-.30 cents per gal. Buying bottled water off the shelf may be a bit expensive...but any filtered water may be a far better choice than using tap water...unless you happen to be a avaition engineer!
Sorry...thats a inside joke...
