I've been curious about that myself. The ones at the home building supply stores are quite a bit cheaper than the ones at the LFS or online. The only difference that I've noticed is the pet shop ones claim about gitting rid of phospahtes. The home supply stores don't really say. I wonder if you bought one of theirs and then replaced the cartridges with the pet store ones if they would work just as well. I've heard on this board that the deionized actually strips the water of virtually everything and it's hard to bring it up to what it should be. I don't know if that is true or not, but I don't think I'll go with a DI unit. Hope this helps some. :)

I am not too certain about the difference in the home-vs-pet store RO filters. I do know that DI water is extremely clean. A DI filter will take out all the free ionic elements in the water. DI water shouldn't be consumed, it will run through you a sive and strip out a lot of the ions you nervous system needs to operate properly. DI water will dissolve anything you put into it more quickly and efficiently (oxygen, sea salt mixes, etc.).
