Just curious what the difference is between buying an RO system from a Hardware Store (Lowes/Home Depot etc.) for example whirlpool or other name brand, vs buying an aquatic company RO from say Kent Marine or Seachem etc.?
No difference other than maybe gph. Manards carries Omnifilter and HD and Lowes carries Whirlpool i believe.I used the Omnifilter and im soon to add a DI canister to it $40.

Thanks....I have a little hole pre-cut in my kitchen counter for a RO faucet (at least I assume that is what its for). Is that something you can do with any RO system?

Yes sir
Usually there is a knockout blanks in sinks for sprayers or filter faucets. My particular RO unit came with a faucet.

so is there a difference between the two though? Or are they the same? I am looking to get one but they are so expensive.
No same filters, same membrane.....i think the only diff is gpd .The ones they sell are around 30 gpd.Since i bought mine though i have seen them cheaper on aquarium sales sites.Dont know about the quality of these though.
There is a difference in that the unit you buy for home use will have a holding tank to store your water (a not very large one). Units made specifically for aquariums are continues flow until you turn off the water

how much will one cost me about. Between home and marine?
Dollar for dollar you are better going with the aquarium unit your not paying for the holding tank and plumbing and that will off set buying a better unit IMO You can get a 50gpd 4 stage RO/DI for around $165.

On a scale of 1-10, how difficult are they to install?
Not knowing your plumbing ability its hard to say but it is pretty straight forward just make sure be for you leave the store that you get all the parts you need to install to your particular sink (saves you a trip back )
i had never plumbed anything before putting in my unit. so it took me some time to do, but it wasn't difficult. i would have given it a 7.
when i moved it out of my first apartment and into this one, it went a lot smoother. i would give it a 3 now.

I am 15 and never plumbed a thing in my life and I got a spectrapure and got it home hooked it up to my outside hose (cause I did not know it came with a hose adapter and not a faucet) and put the drain in my sink and the good line in a bucket and thats it. The next day I had to go to HD and get a adapter for hose to sink but thats it
