RO unit is wasteful.....??

I have been told that a RO unit wastes about the same gallonage it processes. i.e. 10 gal total for 5 gal usuable. Here on the desert water is a precious commodity and we try not to waste it. Would softened water filtered through 2 charcoal 12 in X 2 in units be good enough to use for a FOWLR setup. Thank for any opinions/help.

If you have test kit, check the water first. My RO/DI wastes 4x the water it produces BTW. There are some folks here from your neck of the woods...try PMing maxalmon.

They truly are. We recycle our waste water, using it for watering plants, flushing toilets etc. We just put the discharge tube into a large trash can and then pump it off as we need it. That way we dont feel so guilty.
You can use plain tap water if you want to in a fowlr. Just be prepared for some algae blooms if you have phosphates in the water.
