Ro water holding tank

Ok, so i finally got a JBJ auto top off from a local reefer, and I'm getting a little pump for it tonight.
So now I need to figure out what is the best for holding the RO/DI water.
My LFS uses the brutes.
I was kind of hoping to get a transparent food grade water barrel about 20-30 gallons, but I went to the water store just now and they want a rediculous amount of money for them. So it looks like its the brute for me.
Do you guys put little taps on the side of the can to allow you to remove water easily or just dip it out of the top?
Do you run the electrical for the pump through the side wall and then silicone it in or just over the top? same thing with the hose going to the sump?
I was gonna do the joe thing and make my trash can magically disapear so they bring me a new one. but the one they brought out for me that I use right now is not new at all. so that's out.
Do you guys leave the lid on to keep out bugs and debris? Or do yuo leave it open for good areation?

I'm not really concerned with a heater. Ive never heated any of my water outside of the tank. I do 10% water changes once a week and that 10% of 65 degree water in my tank doesn't even change the temp enough to make my heater come on. i used to heat all the time but now i feel like its just a waste of resources

Good point, I keep my house around 68, I guess it wouldn't really hurt, there are enough things to plug in with this hobby. i keep my tank around 78, I usually change 15 gallons of the 65 gallon display.

might be different for you doing a 20% water change instead of a 10% like I do. just keep track of the temps as you change the water and see how it goes :)

I do mine weekly at 10% so if you did that you would only need to do about 7.5, but if you weant to do it bi-weekly then 15 gallons is about right.

I could make half of it Top off RO water and the other half change water. I would like to make this in bench so I could sit and watch my tank, a lazy boy would be prefered but i would probably sleep there every night.

yeah, we had a great fall, but it got cold in a hurry once the snow came about 2 weeks ago.
its been right around 0 when I get to work every day and its about 20 during the day.
hours are getting short. sucks

This is my setup... left brute is RODI water. Right brute gets filled by left one on demand via pump and by turning ball valve. Right brute also serves as a heating/salt mixing tub.
Left brute gets filled automatically by RO unit(there's a float inside). Pipes going up are for sending fresh or salt water to sump depending on how ball valves are opened.
It makes my life easier... not sure if this gives you any ideas for a setup that works for you. Oh, and there's enough room between lid and tub to just lay cords on rim and closing lid.

I don;t understand the RO shut off thing. mine is connected to a faucet in my wash tub in the garage, I don't think I can make it turn on and off, unless there is something I'm missing here.

I think mine would need something extra to do that. its just got a faucet adapter with a plastic hose running off it that goes right into the system and then a white hose that runs out the other end and another section that has the waste water.
I don't see how even adding anything in there could shut off my faucet water or how that would go.
Not a big deal, i'm going to have a Brute big enough to hold enough water for a few weeks worth of top off, so if I have to do it manually like I've been doing no biggie

I have an RO system in my home, all I did was put a Tee at the outlet of the RO unit, one of the lines go to your existing faucet and the other line goes to your RO top off unit. I got the snap tees at a hardware store. Usually the lines are 3/8". I have a shut off on the end of the line, I fill a 15 gallon garbage pail.

I agree wih the 2 containers--fresh RO and newly mixed. I used a tall kitchen garbage can.

I don't have enough room in my little fish room to do 2 big containers, so I'll probably just do one good sized brute and then mix the fresh saltwater in a seperate holding container outside the room in the garage like Ive always done.
Kinda cramped in there, should ahve built it bigger to take up more of the garage LOL
