Rock beauty and regal angel's

Has anyone ever had success keeping these beauties? Let's define success as 5 years living. Haven't found one success story yet. Then why do we continue to buy these fish? IMO they s/b banned from sale until marine biologists figure out how to keep them healthy in captivity and/or they are bred in aquariums. I know it's diet related but we haven't figured it out yet. Am I being a bit too much of an "activist" here( although I don't consider myself one) or do you share my views? ALL opinions welcomed.

Good reply - My brother recently acquired two regal angels - they are both eating well now but the jury is still out on 'em.
Interestingly, my LFS brought in about 20 juvenile Rock Beauty's - tank raised and conditioned on prepared foods. Hopefully this trend will continue - in the meantime there are plenty of other good fish out there to choose from.

I lost a Rock Beauty about 2 weeks ago. It lived and ate rather well, too. One day he was just dead. Pissed me off. Angels suck! I've never had one make it for a long period of time.

I'm currently in Key Largo( lucky me missed all the snow) and just got back from snorkeling at carries fort reef. It was absolutely great! Saw some super looking RB's. Why would anyone want to take these beauties out of the ocean knowing their poor survival rate is beyond me. l'm making a personal plea...leave these beauties in the ocean. The biggest one I saw was about 11 inches or so. Also saw 4 others about 5-6 inches. Captain said they are becoming very scarce as prople keep demanding them and they keep dieing in captivity. Sad story.
Saltfisher-Your poor record w/ angelfish(besides the RB's) is because of overstocking which we have previously mentioned. I've had pretty good success w/ angel's and in fact have done well w/them for the exception of my emperor which died due to a water supplement reaction.
Leave the RB's and Regals in the ocean...please.

I wanted a regal angel at first... but when I found out about their success rate (or lack there of), I decided that a not-so-pretty, but much longer lived fish would do fine for me. When I get my tank set up (whenever that day should come), I'm planning on putting a Coral Beauty in there. IMO, they are just as beautiful as a regal and do much better in captivity.
BTW, I am currently accpeting donations towards my saltwater tank. :D

That's just it. If it was an overstocking issue, the fish would have had problems to begin with. Also, I am not removing the fish from the ocean. I see them in LFS' and buy them. I will never buy another Angel. I said that to myself when I bought that Angel, but I did it anyway. I was so impressed with it because it lived longer than any other I've ever had. On another note, my Indian Yellowtail is doing fine. I hope I can find her another home before something happens to her.

Agree that you don't take them from the ocean but by buying them from the retailer , a demand is created and retailers/wholesalers keep stocking them. If we stop buying and there is no demand, they'll stop stocking them and they will stay in the ocean where they belong.
