Rock question

I have some rock that has been sittting in my garage for awhile. I had it in my tank when it was a fish only tank. It is the red rock that you can buy at LFS for cheap money. You see it in alot of FW tanks. It has some crap on it from sitting around and I would like to give it a good cleaning and use it as base rock in my reef tank. I have 50 lbs of LR in there now.
How can I clean it and make sure it is safe to put in my tank?
thanks

was the rock protected at all while it was in your garage? boxed, bagged, etc.
if it wasn't, i personally wouldn't use it. not worth the risk

Regardless if it was proteted or not, it sounds like lava rock by your discription and lava rock is not s/w safe.

Like I try to preach "If it aint aragonite, it aint aragoright". Ok that was dumb, but seriously I recommend to anyone I come across to go with calcium carbonate rock only, it's the sure way to prevent problems.
