OK...I was given some rock today...It is the type you buy from Walmart's aquarium section. There are no labels, and someone said it may be like volcano rock

Can I put this in a SW tank....or just use it in my FW??
Here is a pic

LOL....I know some types of rock contain metals that are bad....Like I said it was given to me...I have 3 SW tanks, and 3 FW tanks...so I could use it anywhere...I just want to be sure...

You will always find people that go against the grain and do things that are considered outside the common knowledge as being good or bad.
IMO I would not use the rock you have shown in a saltwater environment, nor would I ever put Lave rock into my tank. The chances that there will be problems are again IMO greater than there not being problems. And I don't know about the rest of you but I have too much time and investment in my tank to take these two particular chances.
That said we all decide on our level of risk we are willing to take and do so hopefully with the best information we can get and decisions based on that data.

Well if I was willing to take a risk I would not have even asked...LOL...Thanks...I think I will just put them in the FW tanks....I too have much time and LOTS of money invested in my SW tanks...and am NOT willing to take a chance
AGAIN THANKS

If you had this rock in a saltwater tank it will kill the friends freshwater fish. Once anything has been in a saltwwater tank it can't be used in freshwater setups anymore.
Once this rock is in saltwater it will seed and become live rock. I believe it is fake (man made) rock.

IDK Flower...when I first set up my sw tanks I had bought a lot of fake fw plants..well after hearing that you do not put that in sw tanks, I took them out and put them in my FW tanks...everyone is fine...
surely one would have enough common sense to CLEAN the stuff first

Really??? I was always told to never, ever use something from a saltwater tank. I had freshwater for many years and never did that.
I said the same thing about washing...I was told that salt penetrates and washing would not clean the salt out of it. Even boiling it wouldn't make it safe according to the experts.
So you figure it is just a myth?

What Ms. Kitty has pictured is called Feller Stone Rainbow Rock. It is composed of slate. I would not feel comfortable with slate in my saltwater tank. There is too much stuff out there that is good for our tanks to cut some corners with something that is questionable IMO.

Well IDK if I would call it a myth..But I would never put something in a different tank w/o cleaning it really good anyways....I have never heard that once you put something in sw you can't use it in fw
maybe it depends what it is.
SPANKO...WOWWW...I have "rainbow rock"

So it is real rock??? All this time I thought it was man made. I learn more everyday. Thanks.
I know slate is a bad thing. I thought all slate was black.

Flower, the actual rock material is natural, the shapes however are man made so you are partially correct. They take the rocks out in big sections and then cut them down, later they are shaped to meet the desired function. Some cut them into stepping stones, some into aquarium rock, all depends on what the customer wants.

flower,
the rock has been in his tank for over a month now ,without any issues.
how can the rock become live rock again without salt?
lr dies in a hypo at 1.009 salinity.
so you guys wouldnt use this rock?
well then how are the fish ok when our pipes are put together with pvc cement, people using spray foam for decrative fixtures.these are toxic.
