rock types

Besides using live rock can one use other rocks like Tufa, Lava etc in a saltwater tank?

yes.my friend went the cheap route. first he boiled the rock. when he set up the tank he bought a couple pounds of live rock to seed the rock with bacteria. i will say his tank looked alright but not natural. i can't remember what rock he used but it looks like base rock

Yes you can use other rock and seed it with LR like stated, but I cant tell you which ones since I didn't do that and never read up too much on it. I do know that the Lava rock is not a good choice---it could release unwanted toxins (I believe) into the tank. Here's a bump for ya, HTH some.

I would steer clear of volcanic rocks. They can have large amounts of silica (over 50% of their weight).
