if kept damp it can last for a few days before loosing most of its bacteria and life.
most rock is shipped dry packed with moistened newspaper on top of it to keep it damp during shipping.
Is there a specific reason you ask?

Yes, even rock from a distributor comes in a styrofoam lined box with wet newspaper on top
The amount of die off does depend though.

They usually soak the newspaper in saltwater to keep the rock damp.
