Rocks in Sump?

I just bought some more base rock. I'm going to let it sit in some saltwater for a week or so. I don't think I'll use it all, so I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to put it in my sump?

Is a week long enough for it to sit in saltwater? Is that even necessary?

No, dead rock does not need to cure. It is dead, there is no die off to cause an ammonia spike. Best thing to put in a sump is dead coral...it has all kinds of tiny places for copepods and such.

When you say 'dead' do you mean it has been out of salt water and dried out? If so, then it can go into sump. If it is coming out of another person's tank or LFS then I would keep in salt water and out of sump for 3 weeks minimum to assure you are not bringing in Ich. Ich can be harbored on virtually any wet surface..be it fish, inverts or rock.

Rocks in the sump can be good and bad. You need to make sure you rinse them every once in a while or have some CUC members down there or they can collect detritus and actually become a nitrate factory. I had this issue, it was making me crazy and then Spanko pointed it out to me, a simple thing that is overlooked a lot.
If the rock is DRY base rock, it can go right into the sump.

Yes, they are dry base rocks. Good call on cleaning them so they don't collect waste. What kind of cuc do you have in there, snails? I have the rocks in saltwater now, I think I'm going to drill some holes in them so I have lots of options for coral plugs.....and caves for pods! Re-aquascaping for me this afternoon!

I keep some snails, a misbehaved urchin and a few hermits that I've yanked out of my main tank in there. I also threw in a rock that I knew was infested with bristle worms for a few weeks and then put it back in the DT, now there's bristle's all over the rock in the sump.

LOL...I also have a banished urchiun in my refugium...it's a pencil urchin and I found out they like to eat soft corals
and I do keep a few snails and hermits down there too....I have seen lots of bristle works, amphipods, copepods....and something else...not sure what..LOL....so I just let them clean the rock and sand
