Running...

I was at the gym yesterday, trying to decide what makes running so friggin difficult. I generally feel fine while I'm doing it and I feel fine after, but it is just sooo unpleasant.
Is it that running is so physically strenuous that it is difficult to do for long periods of time?
Or
Is it that running is so excrutiatingly boring that even a couple minutes on the treadmill feel like hell?
This may be a stupid thread but at least there are no cats, bacon, or "I'm leaving" issues here...

So if I answer this, does that mean there's a cat, or does that only count if I actually put one in the thread?
I GO FOR BORING!!!!

It is unpleasant because you are Not Forrest Gump.

It is the latter, "running is so excrutiatingly boring". I don't get it either. I have tried several times, outdoors and treadmill, but just can't get into it. Yet, my brother is a track coach, runs marathons, and finds nothing more enjoyable than a brisk 5 mile jog

boring
although i try to run a 5mi every week to stay in shape, its a hour a week ill never get back lol

I actually did a paper on this in college on how running is affected by the mind and the body.
There were these trials set up at Clemson, where people were put on a treadmill with a variety of different things to keep their minds occupied. While the control group was in a plain room, with nothing but a wall to look at.
As it turns out, when people get "tired", it's usually their mind telling them so, not their actual bodies.
The people in the control group lasted the shortest amount of time across the board.
They figured it was because the less you have to think about, the more likely you were to focus on how tired you "think" you should be getting. The ones who lasted the longest were those who were listening to music that they choose.
I also remember another group that seemed to last a long time was when there was an "attractive member of the opposite s ex" within plain view.

So the moral of the story... if you want to try and run, park yourself behind a hottie with an iPod playing your favorite tunes!

With track there's competition, so it isn't boring really...even cross country.
Running without competition is a completely different story. It gets incredibly boring.
However, if you have someone to talk to while running or race against while running, it becomes less boring and for me...even fun.

And Clemson needed a study to know this?

I run about 8 miles a day and can tell you it gets easier the more you get used to it.

I run track, so I do enjoy running. I do agree with pez competition makes it fun. But what makes it really fun is hurdles!!! I think a modification to your treadmill is in order

I couldn't do track this year unfortunately...but I'm a freshman, so it isn't a HUGE deal. I do hurdles too...well I did and am going to next year. That is the most fun thing imo. Falling is even fun! Until you hit the ground.

I admire people who can run. I just can't. I've never been able to. I get dizzy, my whole body aches, and that only takes 2 minutes into the jog! I prefer yoga.

LOL...The only bad thing about running outside is you can't just get off of it..

Thats what a cell phone is for . You just call 911 and they will give you a ride to a place where they will take care of you .

Stop in the middle and do jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups and squats .

It's boredom on a treadmill! Human beings have enormous capacity to run. There are tribes in Africa that hunt by chasing their prey into exhaustion. It is hypothesized that the loss of fur from our bodies allowed us to shed excess heat during exercise more easily, giving us a greater ability to run long distances. So...we have the biological ability to run long distances, we just get bored with the whole thing when we work on a treadmill.
